{"id":1285,"date":"2020-01-21T14:16:16","date_gmt":"2020-01-21T14:16:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bcl.bowdoin.edu\/bowdoin-reads\/?p=1285"},"modified":"2020-01-21T14:20:35","modified_gmt":"2020-01-21T14:20:35","slug":"jessica-perez","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bcl.bowdoin.edu\/bowdoin-reads\/2020\/01\/21\/jessica-perez\/","title":{"rendered":"Jessica Perez"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Wanderers<\/em> is a dystopian novel where people begin to suddenly develop a sleepwalking-like illness.\u00a0 These individuals begin to all walk in the same direction, but no one knows why or seems to be able to stop them.\u00a0 Though the major mystery of the novel is about figuring out what is causing the phenomenon, the greater story is about what happens around the sleepwalkers\u2014both with their loved ones (who follow them along on their journey) and with how society responds.<\/p>\n<p>I most enjoy sci-fi, dystopian stories for their world-building, fantasy quality.\u00a0 As such, the premise of the story is captivating and keeps me turning the pages\u2014which is essential with a book of almost 800 pages.\u00a0 But the element of this book that stays with you, that is true of all great dystopian stories, is the way it reflects (problematic) human behavior.\u00a0 Indeed, this book successfully hits a nerve because it is essentially set in present-day USA, with a few alterations.
