Bird by Bird: Some Instructions for Writing and Life by Anne Lamott is a wonderful book that enveloped me quickly in Lamott’s comforting, yet realistic, advice, and sharp, unassuming tone. As the title suggests, Lamott shares a lot of shrewd opinions about the writing process and both heart-wrenching and humorous experiences she’s had as a published writer, from recording her father’s battle with brain cancer to hilarious stories about her writing students. Don’t be scared away from this book if you don’t like writing though, Lamott also slips in a lot of refreshing perspectives on life itself. Reading Lamott’s book reminded me about how big and exciting the world seemed as a child and to watch out for the little things in life, they’re what you’ll vividly remember and always make for good plot material! Her fast-paced style and entertaining quips and anecdotes made this book a quick and highly enjoyable read.
