I just finished reading Ready Player One by Ernest Cline and already I can’t wait to go back and read it again. It is the perfect book for the self -proclaimed “geek” or pop-culture junkie. It’s riddled with references to famous movies, songs, and television shows, especially those from the eighties.
Ready Player One is set in a future world where things have gotten so bad that most of the population spends all of their time in a utopian virtual reality called the Oasis, the brain child of the extremely wealthy James Halliday. Upon his death, Halliday issues a challenge stating that whoever can find the Easter egg he has hidden in the Oasis inherits his company and his fortune. The catch is that all of the clues are related to pop culture from Halliday’s favorite decade, launching a worldwide obsession with researching his life and all things related to the eighties.
The book follows underdog Wade (a.k.a. Parzival) on his quest to decipher Halliday’s clues and find the Easter egg. This book is perfect for pop-culture buffs or anyone looking for a fun read. I couldn’t put it down.
By the way – if you haven’t read the book yet – it is available on the Library ‘Kindle’ devices.
It was great to see this book recommended here – I just read it as well and also had trouble putting it down. I knew Ernie Cline through his spoken word recordings:

…so have been eagerly awaiting the book. It definitely lived up to the anticipation.
