What would have happened if there had been a competition with anonymous design submissions for a September 11 memorial in New York City in 2002 –and the winner was revealed to be an American architect who happened to be Muslim? The Submission imagines this circumstance and develops an intriguing and all-too-plausible plot about the aftermath. I found myself drawn along by the storyline and by the characters, wanting to know the choices they would make, but agonizing about the turns of plot. Questions of identity and morality abound as “submission” takes on multiple meanings for the varied characters. Will they give in to personal ego and ambition, to prejudice, to mass sentiment, to family pressures, to political expediency, to culturally bound gender roles?
