This semester I am taking an English class called “Fairy Tales and Retellings”. As hinted in the title of the course, the class is focused on examining fairy tales and their adaptations throughout time. Although we read many different fairy tales from a wide range of sources, one book we rely on for how the original tales were told is The Annotated Brothers Grimm. This book is a collection of various German fairy tales as told by the brothers Grimm. The Annotated Brothers Grimm also includes annotations of the fairy tales by Maria Tatar. The fairy tales include: “Cinderella,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Snow White,” and “Rapunzel,” and many, many more. The Grimm brothers were known for their unoriginal tellings of these fairy tales. Although, this is a collection of “children and household tales”, you will likely be surprised when reading some of these tales. I enjoy reading a fairy tale here and there when I’m not busy with school work. One of my favorite fairy tales in the Brothers Grimm is “Rumpelstiltskin.” If you enjoy reading fairy tales, or are looking for a bit of a break, I would definitely recommend this collection of fairy tales!
