My book group is reading Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson. What a book such as Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass is to science (PopSci – allowing the reader to empathize with the main character and their skillful explanation of science) Black Cake seems to be for sociology. My only trouble is keeping track of all the characters and how I think they are related to each other until it is revealed how their stories intertwine. It is a compelling look at the family lives of folks with a backdrop of race, immigration, belonging and more.
I only wish the cake recipe was included – but I guess that’s part of the point!
