I am reading Herzog by Saul Bellow. The book follows Moses Herzog, a college professor, as he writes unsent letters to people in his life: friends, famous figures, colleagues…Much of the action of the novel is developed through these letters. Herzog’s romances, relationships, career, as well as his world view are revealed through his writings. The story becomes about Herzog’s numerous failures to his lovers, students, children, and friends. Despite his personal disasters, Herzog sees himself as a survivor and the reader follows Moses’ psychology and perseverance in his memory of these events. I found Herzog in a used book shop back home, and I knew of a song by the musician ‘Clark’ under the same title—so I decided to give it a try. I have yet to regret it: very powerful and challenging.
