The Everglades: River of Grass
By: Marjory Stoneman Douglas

“There are no other Everglades in the world.” With that sentence begins one of the greatest books in environmental history. Highly recommended by Professor Klingle, this book is largely credited with the creation of a national park dear to my heart. I am from Southwest Florida and live within half an hour’s drive from the Everglades, one the nation’s grandest parks. Douglas’s book speaks to nature’s wonders, its complexity, and its need for protection. This book is a required reading for any Florida native or anyone interested in the environment. The Everglades: River of Grass provides us with a thorough yet very engaging historical telling of one of the world’s largest expanses of wetlands. In light of the Gulf oil spill, this book is a great reminder of some of the greatest achievements of the antecedents of the environmental movement as well as of what remains to be done.
