The Bluest Eye
By: Toni Morrison

Toni Morrison’s ability to transport her readers into the mindset of characters who are often plagued with essential questions surrounding race, acceptance and beauty makes her novels a must read in every home. This story is about a year in the life of a young black girl in Lorain, Ohio named Pecola Breedlove. Pecola’s obsession with beauty and the attainment of blue eyes really hits at a core problem within many if not all black communities, and that is the inability to perceive ourselves with eyes unclouded by centuries of oppression and cultural otherness. Morrison does not provide us with a simple solution to the deep rooted social issues presented in her novel, but the fact that she is exposing problems that often appear to be facts of life, makes her message all the more powerful and causes her readers to question the things we take for granted.
